COBI KV-2 Set 2731

COBI's KV-2 is a 1:48 model built from 510 blocks, 16.5 cm long, with a rotating turret, a movable gun and working tracks and wheels. All markings are printed onto the blocks.

The turret would not turn on a slope

The KV-2 carried a 152 mm howitzer — a piece of siege artillery, put in a tank turret to break Finnish bunkers during the Winter War. The turret needed to be enormous to hold it, and it weighed around twelve tonnes on its own, which is more than some complete tanks of the period.

The consequence was mechanical. The traverse motor could not reliably turn that mass if the tank was standing on a slope, so the vehicle had to be levelled before the gun could be pointed anywhere but straight ahead. Firing was worse: the recoil of a 152 mm howitzer in a turret that size could damage the traverse gear if the gun was not aligned with the hull.

Crew of six, 52 tonnes, slow, prone to breakdown, and armoured heavily enough that in 1941 German gunners watched their anti-tank rounds bounce off it. Roughly 330 were built before the Soviets concluded that the idea did not work and stopped.
