COBI Kübelwagen (PKW Typ 82) - Executive Edition Set 2802

COBI's Kübelwagen Typ 82 Executive Edition is a 1:12 model built from 1,530 blocks, 30.5 cm long, developed with the Deutsches Panzermuseum in Munster. The steering wheel turns the front wheels, the doors open, the boot and engine compartment are accessible, and the interior is reproduced down to the switches and the tools. The Executive Edition adds a display stand, a nameplate, a roof made from real fabric, two sets of headlights, two M24 grenades and a jerrycan.

It is a Beetle underneath

The Kübelwagen is the Volkswagen. Same air-cooled flat-four at the back, same platform chassis, same designer — Ferdinand Porsche's people adapted the civilian car that had not yet reached civilians into the army vehicle that did.

The air cooling turned out to matter more than anything else. A water-cooled engine in Russia needs antifreeze, and a radiator that freezes cracks the block. The Kübelwagen had neither, which is why it kept running in conditions that stopped better vehicles. It weighed only around 700 kilograms, so when it did get stuck, four men lifted it out.

It had no four-wheel drive at all. What it had instead was a smooth flat floor pan that let it slide over obstacles rather than catch on them, and a limited-slip differential. American testers who examined a captured example after the war concluded it was better suited to its job than the Jeep was to its.

Set 2803 is the standard edition of the same vehicle with 1,326 pieces and without the display stand and extras. The 1:12 range also includes the Willys MB (2805) and the Tiger 114 (2807).
