The word ranger meant something quite different before Tolkien

In fantasy a ranger is a specific thing: a solitary woodsman who tracks, shoots, survives outdoors and turns up when needed. Every role-playing game has the class, and it is drawn almost entirely from one source.

Tolkien's Rangers of the North are the Dúnédain, the remnant of a fallen kingdom, guarding a countryside that has no idea it is being guarded and rather dislikes them for looking scruffy. Aragorn is introduced as one, in a corner of an inn, under a different name.

Before that, in English, a ranger was a job: a royal official who patrolled a forest, enforced the hunting laws and prosecuted poachers. The German equivalent, the Förster, still exists and still involves a great deal of walking, and forest districts in Germany are managed by them to this day.

So the fantasy ranger is a medieval civil servant reimagined as a hero — which is a better origin than most fantasy archetypes have.

A mage among the rangers, and an orc

Four figures with three different allegiances is a scene rather than a group. The cabin opens fully, so the interior is somewhere the figures can be rather than a sealed shape.
