Printed, not stickered — and it matters more than it sounds

The specification says no stickers, and for a set aimed at a five-year-old that is the single most practical thing on this page.

A sticker is applied once, by hand, usually badly. It sits slightly crooked, it traps a bubble, and a child who gets it wrong cannot start again. Over the following years the edges lift, dirt collects underneath, and by the time the set is passed on the decoration is peeling off.

A printed part has the design applied by pad printing directly onto the plastic before it leaves the factory — perfectly aligned every time, and effectively permanent. It survives washing, sunlight, being trodden on and being stored in a box for a decade.

The reason not every set does it is cost. Each printed part needs its own printing plate and its own pass through the machine, and the tooling is written off against however many are made. A sheet of stickers costs a few cents regardless of how many designs are on it.

Which is why stickers are common in large, cheap sets and printing is a mark of the more expensive ones — and why a 199-piece set advertising printed parts is making a real claim rather than a marketing one.

Three orcs and a ruin

At this size the set is a scene rather than a building: somewhere for the antagonists to be when they are not attacking anything. It works against sets KC1501 and KC1505, and alongside KC1504, the Orc Battering Ram.
