Small animals and large animals are two different professions

This set is a small-animal practice, and the distinction is real rather than a matter of scale.

A small-animal vet works in a building. The patients come to them, arrive in carriers, and are lifted onto a table at a comfortable working height. The equipment is fixed: an X-ray machine, an anaesthetic system, a laboratory, a surgery.

A large-animal vet works out of a vehicle. The patients weigh half a tonne, cannot be moved, and are treated where they stand — in a stall, a field or a crush. The work is done bent over or kneeling, often at night, frequently in the rain, and the single most important skill is reading an animal that could kill you by accident.

They are trained together and then diverge almost completely. In Germany, where this set comes from, the shortage of large-animal vets is severe enough to be a recurring subject in the farming press: the hours are worse, the pay is lower, and fewer graduates each year choose it.

It converts into the other kind

Adding set KC1107, the Pony Farm Expansion with outdoor stables, turns this small-animal clinic into a large-animal practice — which is a neat piece of design, because it is exactly the change a real practice cannot make.

Why the removable table matters

A model building that does not open is a facade. Everything here is reachable: the table lifts out, the rooms are laid out for a figure to stand in, and the overnight quarters hold the animals that are not going home that evening.
