Kiddicraft's Small Tractor with Trailer is built from 100 pieces โ€” a compact tractor with working wheels, an attachable trailer, and farm tools and produce. Age 5+.

Why the back wheels are so much bigger than the front ones

It is the first thing a child notices about a tractor and it has a proper answer.

A tractor's job is to pull. When it does, the load on the drawbar tries to rotate the machine backwards around its rear axle โ€” which presses the back wheels harder into the ground and lifts weight off the front. That transfer is useful: the harder a driven wheel presses down, the more it can pull before it slips.

So the design leans into it. The rear wheels are large and driven, carrying most of the weight and doing all the work. Big wheels also spread that weight over a longer footprint, which matters on soft ground โ€” a narrow wheel sinks, and a sunk tractor pulls nothing.

The front wheels only steer, so they can be small and light, and small wheels turn in a tighter circle. On older tractors they were sometimes set close together for exactly that reason.

The limit is the one the transfer creates: pull hard enough and the front lifts off entirely. Tractors rear over backwards more often than people expect, which is why the drawbar is mounted low and why weights are bolted to the nose.

Small is the more useful size

A compact tractor does the work a large one cannot: moving between buildings, through a yard gate, along a row. Most farms own both, and the small one is on more often.

In the Brick Farm range

Set KC1110 is the large tractor with trailer, KC1113 the red tractor with roller and mower. Both fit through the barn entrance of set KC1108.
