Kiddicraft Brick Farm โ Rabbit Hutch Building Set KC1101
Kiddicraft's Brick Farm Rabbit Hutch is built from 89 pieces โ a hutch with fencing, foliage and feeding tools, plus a farmer figure and rabbits. Age 5+.
Rabbit keeping is an organised hobby in Germany with its own championships
A rabbit hutch in a German farm set is not a pet accessory. It represents something with clubs, standards, judges and a national federation.
Kaninchenzucht โ rabbit breeding โ is run much like pigeon racing or dog showing. Breeders belong to local clubs, raise animals to written breed standards covering weight, coat, ear length and colour, and show them at exhibitions where judges award points. There are dozens of recognised breeds, from the two-kilo Hermelin to the Deutsche Riese, which reaches seven kilograms and the size of a small dog.
The scale of it is easy to underestimate. The national federation has had well over a hundred thousand members, and the large shows exhibit tens of thousands of animals across a weekend.
The roots are practical rather than decorative. Rabbits breed quickly, eat kitchen scraps and grass, need almost no space, and produce meat and fur โ which made them the backyard livestock of choice through two wars and the years after them. Almost every German household with a garden kept some. What survived the return of prosperity was the club and the show.
A small first set
Eighty-nine pieces is perhaps fifteen minutes, which suits a five-year-old building alone. The animals matter more than the structure at this size โ a hutch without rabbits in it is a box.
In the Brick Farm range
Sets KC1102 to KC1105 are the other small animal scenes; KC1106 (Pony Farm), KC1108 (Farm Stable) and KC1112 (Veterinary Practice) are the buildings.
