Horses are increasingly kept outside, and this is what that looks like

The distinction between an indoor stable and an outdoor one is not decorative. It reflects a change in how horses are kept that has taken place within living memory.

For most of the twentieth century a riding-school horse lived in a box stall inside a barn — warm, dry, and alone for twenty-two hours a day. It was considered proper care.

It is now widely regarded as the opposite. A horse is a herd animal built to walk fifteen kilometres a day while grazing, and confinement produces exactly the problems you would predict: stereotypies like weaving and crib-biting, poor hoof quality, respiratory trouble from ammonia and dust, and colic.

The alternative — Offenstall in German, open or loose housing — gives the horse a shelter it can walk into and out of, with companions and space around it. Horses kept this way grow thicker coats, tolerate cold far better than their owners expect, and are measurably healthier.

An outdoor stable with fencing around it is therefore the modern arrangement rather than a lesser version of the indoor one.

It extends set KC1106, the Pony Farm. It also converts set KC1112, the Veterinary Practice, from a small-animal clinic into a large-animal one — which is the single most useful thing to know about this set, and is easy to miss.
