A pony is not a young horse

It is the most common misunderstanding about this subject, and it is worth knowing before explaining the set to a five-year-old who asks.

Pony is a size category, not an age. Under most rulebooks a horse measuring less than 14.2 hands at the withers — about 148 centimetres — is a pony, and one measuring more is a horse, regardless of breed or age. A Shetland stays a pony for its whole life. A foal that will grow to seventeen hands is a horse from birth.

The distinction also describes real differences. Ponies are proportionally stockier, with thicker coats, shorter legs and denser bone. They are famously hardier, tolerating weather and poor grazing that would leave a horse struggling, and they have a reputation among riding instructors for being considerably cleverer than is convenient.

Which is why children learn on them. A pony is the right size to mount and fall off without much harm, and it will test a beginner's instructions in a way a placid horse will not.

The arena is the point

A riding arena in a model set is not decoration — it is where everything that happens on a riding yard happens. The stables are where ponies wait; the arena is where the lessons, the schooling and the shows take place.
