What an arena is made of decides whether the horses stay sound

A riding arena looks like a fenced rectangle of sand. The surface inside it is engineered, and getting it wrong ends careers.

Too hard, and every stride sends shock up the leg. The damage accumulates in the joints and the coffin bone, and it does not announce itself until it is serious.

Too deep, and the hoof sinks and slides on landing. The tendons and ligaments take the strain of stopping that movement, and tendon injuries are among the slowest of all to heal — a year out is common, and many horses never return to the same work.

So a modern arena is built in layers: a drained and levelled base, a membrane, and a top layer of washed silica sand blended with synthetic fibre or textile that binds the grains together and keeps the surface springy rather than loose. It is watered to keep the fines from blowing away, and harrowed constantly, because every circuit of hooves pushes material outward and the track wears deep while the middle stays untouched.

Riding schools spend more on maintaining the footing than on almost anything else, and a yard with a bad arena loses its clients to one that does not.
