The sausage stand is a German institution with a documented inventor

An Imbiss — a small stand selling sausage, chips and a drink to people standing up — is as much a part of a German street as the bakery, and its signature dish has a name and a date attached to it.

On 4 September 1949, in the Charlottenburg district of Berlin, a woman named Herta Heuwer mixed tomato paste, Worcestershire sauce and curry powder — obtained, by her own account, from British soldiers — and poured it over fried sausage. She called it Currywurst, sold it from a stand at the corner of Kant- and Kaiser-Friedrich-Straße, and at the height of it was serving ten thousand portions a week.

She patented the sauce in 1959 under the name Chillup. The patent was never worth much, because the recipe is four ingredients and anybody could approximate it, and within a decade every stand in the country had its own version.

Heuwer died in 1999. There is a plaque at the site of her stand, and Berlin ran a Currywurst museum for several years.

Uschi and the painter

The second figure being a decorator in work clothes is the accurate detail. The Imbiss is where trades eat — quick, hot, standing up, and open at the hours that suit someone who started at six.
