The stripes are not decoration — they are the lighthouse's name

A lighthouse has to be identifiable at night and in daylight, and it solves the two problems separately.

At night it is the light characteristic: a specific rhythm of flashes and pauses, unique along that stretch of coast. A navigator times it against a chart and knows exactly which tower they are looking at. Not roughly — exactly.

By day the light is useless, so the tower itself carries the identification. This is the daymark: red and white bands, black and white spirals, checkerboards, a single colour. The patterns exist to be told apart from each other, and they are recorded in the same lists of lights as the flash sequences.

Red and white horizontal bands are the standard German North Sea pattern, which is why this model looks the way it does. The stripes also solve a practical problem — a white tower vanishes against a bright sky, and a dark one vanishes against a cliff, while a banded tower stands out against both.

The keeper

A figure in traditional dress is a period detail. Lighthouse keeping as a profession has essentially ended: automation removed the need for anyone to live in the tower, and almost every light in Europe has run unmanned for decades.

In the Moin range

Set KC1302 is the small lighthouse, KC1303 the beach chair and KC1304 the fishing trawler. Moin is the North German greeting — used at any hour, despite what visitors assume.
