The night before, Germans smash crockery on the doorstep

A German wedding has a ritual that surprises visitors: the Polterabend, held the evening before.

Guests turn up at the couple's house — traditionally uninvited, since the whole neighbourhood is welcome — bringing old porcelain, crockery and earthenware, and break it on the ground outside. Plates, cups, sinks, lavatories. The louder the better.

The couple then has to sweep it up. Together. That is the point of the exercise: the first job of the marriage is clearing up a mess somebody else made, and doing it as a pair.

Glass is never broken, because glass is said to mean luck and breaking it would break the luck. Mirrors are avoided for the obvious reason. Only pottery — and the noise is meant to drive off bad spirits, which is where the name comes from: poltern means to make a racket, and it is the same root as Poltergeist.

The custom is still widely observed, and it is one of the few surviving German wedding traditions that predates the church ceremony entirely.

Five figures is the ceremony

Bride, groom, two witnesses and a ring bearer is not an arbitrary number — it is the minimum a German civil wedding actually needs, since a Standesamt ceremony requires witnesses.

The spare hair and skin-tone parts are the practical feature: a child building this as a specific wedding can make the couple resemble the couple.
