A German village of 1,800 people hosts 85,000 metal fans every year
Wacken is a farming village in Schleswig-Holstein with two churches, a fire station and a population that would fit in a large secondary school.
Since 1990 it has hosted Wacken Open Air, which is now the largest heavy metal festival in the world. Around 85,000 ticket holders arrive each August, along with staff and crew β which means the village multiplies in size roughly fiftyfold for a week.
What makes it remarkable is that the village is in favour. Farmers rent their fields as campsites, the volunteer fire brigade works the festival, and the local clubs run stalls that fund them for the rest of the year. Tickets have sold out in advance for well over a decade, sometimes within hours of going on sale.
Germany does this at scale. Rock am Ring at the NΓΌrburgring draws around 90,000; Hurricane, Southside and Rock im Park run to similar numbers. For a country often described as reserved, the summer festival calendar is enormous.
