The winch is what makes it a trawler

A trawler is not defined by its shape or its size. It is defined by what it does: dragging a net through the water behind it, rather than setting nets and coming back for them.

Doing that requires hauling a heavy, water-filled net up from depth, repeatedly, all day. By hand it is brutal work that limits the boat to whatever its crew can physically lift — which is why trawling was marginal until steam winches arrived in the 1880s.

The winch changed the scale of fishing more than the engine did. A mechanically hauled net can be far larger, worked far deeper and shot far more often. Within a generation the North Sea fleet had transformed, and so had the catch — within two generations, so had the fish stocks.

Modern German cutters on the North Sea and Baltic are direct descendants: a hull, an engine, and a winch that does the actual work.

What the storage compartments are for

The catch has to go somewhere immediately, and the detail is the reason fishing boats look as they do — a large part of the hull is not for the crew, it is hold.
