Eleven shops that make a street

City Corner is the point of this set, and it is easy to miss when the shops are listed separately.

Each building is a narrow shopfront roughly 18 to 20 cm tall with a flat side wall, designed to stand shoulder to shoulder with the others. Bought one at a time they are pleasant little models; bought as a run of four or five they become a terrace, and the effect changes completely — a row of shops reads as a place in a way that a single building never does.

At under twenty dollars each the series is also one of the cheapest ways to build a modular street, and the open backs mean the interiors stay visible rather than sealed away.

The window is the shop

A patisserie puts its work in the window and always has, for a reason that is less obvious than it looks: cake is the one food that is bought with the eyes and cannot be smelled through glass.

A bakery selling bread can rely on the smell reaching the street. A dessert shop cannot — so the entire selling job falls to the display, which is why the classic patisserie window is at eye level, lit from above, and arranged like a jeweller's case.

It is also why dessert shops are lit more brightly than almost any other small retailer. Colour is most of the appeal, and colour cannot be judged in a dim room.
