This is an expansion, not an island
Worth putting first, because the set name says Expansion and people still miss it.
The Guard Tower is not a standalone module. It has no rock island base of its own β it is built to attach to one of the existing Governors Island sets and extend it. Ordered on its own, you have 443 pieces and a tower with nothing to stand on.
If you are starting the Governors Island system from nothing, buy a module with a base first: set 105181 is the Harbour, set 105128 the Tavern. This comes afterwards.
What a guard tower was actually watching for
A tower on a fortified island in the Caribbean was not mainly looking for pirates. It was looking for sails, and working out whose they were while there was still time to do something about it.
A ship on the horizon is roughly twenty kilometres out and perhaps two hours away. From sea level you cannot see that far β the horizon is about five kilometres for a standing man. Every ten metres of height buys you several more kilometres of warning, which is the entire reason lookout towers are tall.
Two hours is the difference between a garrison at its posts and a garrison asleep. That is what the height was for, and it is why the first thing built on a fortified island was usually something to see from.
