BlueBrixx's Freight Shed is built from 1,033 blocks on a base of 38.5 Γ— 25.5 cm, with the shed itself 24 Γ— 14.5 cm. Sliding doors, a studless interior floor, and accessories including crates, pallets and a small crane. Designed by Alex, released 2019.

The building every station had and almost none still has

A goods shed handled the freight that was too small to fill a wagon. A farmer sending ten sacks, a shop receiving three crates, a workshop shipping a machine β€” all of it arrived here, was sorted, and went onward in a wagon shared with everyone else's.

That meant every station of any size needed one, along with staff to run it, and the shed was frequently the largest building in the yard. It is the reason railway freight worked at all for ordinary people rather than only for collieries and steelworks.

Containers ended it. Once freight moved in standard boxes loaded by crane and handled at a few large terminals, the small shed had nothing to do, and the railways closed them in their thousands from the 1960s. A great many still stand, converted into workshops, garages and homes, which is why the shape is oddly familiar even to people who have never seen one in use.

The floor is smooth on purpose

The interior floor uses studless tiles rather than standard bricks. That is a small production cost and a significant difference: crates and pallets can be slid and rearranged, and the surface reads as concrete rather than as a brick model.

It is the detail that separates a building you look at from one you use as part of a layout.

Sets 101043 (Train Station) and 102535 (Railway Platform) are the other station buildings, designed to stand alongside this one.
