The Flakpanzer IV Wirbelwind, or "Air Trumpet," is a German self-propelled anti-aircraft gun from the final period of World War II. It was built on the chassis of the Third Reich's most popular tank, the Panzer IV. Production dates to November 1944. Chassis of older versions of the Panzer IV or newer versions withdrawn from the front for repairs were rebuilt. The traditional turret was replaced by a polygonal open turret equipped with a quadruple 20mm caliber Flak 38 anti-aircraft gun. The rotating turret proved very effective against infantry. Due to the dramatic situation of the Third Reich, production of this weapon was limited to only 87-105 copies.
