The D is the packaging, not the contents

This set and set 1417 contain exactly the same six models at the same price. The difference is how they arrive.

This version is one large box with a handle — a present, wrapped and handed over once. Set 1417 is a strip of six small sealed boxes, which makes it six small presents instead.

Neither is better. The question is whether you want one occasion or six.

Why construction vehicles suit this format

The machinery on a construction vehicle is on the outside. A bulldozer has a visible blade and rams, an excavator a visible arm, a crane a visible jib — nothing is hidden under bodywork.

That matters at 80 pieces per model. A sports car at that size is a wedge with wheels and could be almost anything; an excavator with an arm is unmistakably an excavator. It is why small construction sets read so much better than small car sets, and why every manufacturer makes them.
