Tipping a loaded truck is more dangerous than it looks
A four-axle tipper carries something like 18 tonnes of gravel, and raising that load four metres into the air turns a stable vehicle into an unstable one in about twenty seconds.
The centre of gravity rises as the body goes up, and while the load is still in the body the truck is top-heavy. If the ground is not level β and a tipper is almost always working on ground that is not β the whole vehicle can go over sideways. It is one of the most common serious accidents in construction haulage, and it happens to experienced drivers.
Material that sticks makes it worse. Wet clay or frozen aggregate does not slide out; it stays in one lump at the top of a raised body, and the driver, seeing nothing come out, raises it further.
Which is why tipper operation has a set of rules that look excessive until you know why: level the vehicle first, never tip on a slope, never move while the body is raised, and get out and look rather than assuming the load has gone.
Four axles
Two steering axles at the front, two driven at the back. European weight rules limit load per axle, so the number of axles determines how much a vehicle may legally carry β and 32 tonnes gross, the standard German construction truck, needs four.
