Dining cars have never made money

Not on the Rheingold, not on the Orient Express, not on Amtrak today. A dining car is one of the most expensive vehicles in a train to buy, to staff and to run, and the revenue from selling meals has essentially never covered it.

Railways ran them anyway, for a reason that has nothing to do with catering. On a journey of six or eight hours, whether a passenger can eat properly decides whether the train is a serious alternative to flying or driving. The dining car is not a profit centre; it is the thing that makes the seats saleable.

It also carried the reputation. The Rheingold's kitchen was part of what the Bundesbahn was advertising β€” a train with a chef, linen and proper glassware, going somewhere at a civilised speed. Take that away and it is a fast train with a trolley.

Most railways have now done exactly that, which is why the dining car is largely a museum object. A handful of routes keep one, and passengers who have used them talk about it decades later.

In the BlueBrixx range

Set 104283 is the BR 103 locomotive in matching livery, 104284 the compartment car and 104286 the observation car with its glass dome. The four are designed to run as a train.
