COBI Volkswagen T2a Pritschenwagen Set 24618

COBI's Volkswagen T2a Pritschenwagen is a 1:35 model built from 125 blocks under original Volkswagen licence, 13.5 cm long, with rubber wheels, printed detail and one figure.

The flatbed, not a van

Pritschenwagen means flatbed truck, and that is what this is: the Transporter with the box body removed and an open load platform in its place, with drop sides that fold flat for loading from any direction.

It was the version tradesmen bought. A joiner or a builder needs to put long things on a vehicle and take them off again quickly, and a van door makes that harder rather than easier. Volkswagen also sold a double-cab version with a second row of seats and a shorter bed, so a crew and their materials travelled together.

Because the engine sits under the load floor at the back rather than in front, the flatbed had a longer usable bed than any conventional pickup of comparable length. That is the whole argument for the layout, and it is why these vans stayed in commercial use for decades after the passenger versions had become collectors' items.
