COBI Volkswagen T2a Camper Set 24616

COBI's Volkswagen T2a Camper is a 1:35 set built from 272 blocks under original Volkswagen licence: the van itself at 14 cm, plus a picnic scene with a wooden table, benches and a tree, two tourist figures and a dog, a camping stove, plates, pans, a fish, a bottle and glass, and two skateboards.

The driver sits in front of the front wheels

Look at the shape. There is no bonnet, because the engine is at the back, and the driver sits right at the nose of the vehicle with the steering wheel almost vertical in front of him.

That layout is why a van barely longer than a family saloon could carry nine people or a workshop's worth of tools: nothing was wasted on an engine bay. It is also the reason these vans have the reputation they do among people who have driven them. There is nothing at all between the driver's shins and whatever the van hits, and everyone who owns one knows it.

It did not stop anybody. The T2a went on sale in 1967 and the shape stayed in production somewhere in the world until 2013.
