COBI Volkswagen Passat B1 Variant Polizei Set 24645
COBI's Volkswagen Passat B1 Variant Polizei is a 1:35 model built from 116 blocks under official Volkswagen licence, 13 cm long, in West German police livery with a brick-built roof beacon, movable wheels on rubber tires and printed markings. A sticker sheet is included.
Why the estate and not the saloon
Police forces almost always bought the Variant, and the reason is the boot. A patrol car in the 1970s carried warning triangles, cones, a first aid kit, blankets, a fire extinguisher, measuring equipment, a spare radio set and whatever had been seized that shift. A saloon boot with a small opening swallowed none of that conveniently.
The estate also solved a problem nobody advertises: an estate can carry a stretcher, and in an era when many rural areas had no ambulance within twenty minutes, patrol cars did occasionally have to.
The Passat Variant served across West Germany through the 1970s and 1980s with state forces and the Bundesgrenzschutz, in the green and white that was standard until the switch to blue in the 2000s.
In the COBI range
Part of the 1:35 Volkswagen collection. Sets 24641 and 24644 are the civilian Variant and saloon, and 24643 the Passat with a caravan.
