COBI Volkswagen Golf GTI (1976-1983) Yellow Set 24663

COBI's Volkswagen Golf GTI in yellow is a 1:35 model built from 74 blocks under official Volkswagen licence, 11 cm long, with movable wheels on rubber tires. A sticker sheet is included.

It was quick because it weighed nothing

The original GTI made 110 horsepower, which by any modern measure is nothing at all. A current Golf GTI makes more than twice that.

The first one weighed about 810 kilograms. The current one weighs around 1,450. That is the entire explanation: the 1976 car had roughly one horsepower for every seven and a half kilos, and it changed direction, stopped and turned in a way that had nothing to do with power at all. Light cars flatter drivers. Heavy ones flatter engines.

Everything since has added weight — crash structure, sound deadening, airbags, electronics, larger wheels — and manufacturers have answered it with more power. The lap times improved. The feeling that made people buy the first one is the thing everybody has been trying to get back ever since.
