COBI Volkswagen Golf GTI (1976-1983) White Set 24662

COBI's Volkswagen Golf GTI in white is a 1:35 model built from 74 blocks under official Volkswagen licence, 11 cm long, with movable wheels on rubber tires. A sticker sheet is included.

The gearknob was designed by a porcelain painter

Two details define the inside of a Mk1 GTI: the tartan seat cloth and the gear knob shaped like a golf ball. Both came from the same person, and she was not a car designer.

Gunhild Liljequist had trained in decorating porcelain and joined Volkswagen working on colour and trim. When the GTI was being put together on almost no budget, she proposed the tartan — because it was cheap, hard-wearing and looked like nothing else in a small car — and the golf ball, which was a joke about the model name that Volkswagen's engineers went along with.

Both are still being copied nearly fifty years later, on cars with development budgets that would have funded the entire original GTI project several hundred times over.
