COBI Volkswagen Golf Cabriolet (1979-1993) Set 24660
COBI's Volkswagen Golf Cabriolet is a 1:35 model built from 89 blocks under official Volkswagen licence, 11 cm long, in red, with movable wheels on rubber tires. A sticker sheet is included.
It outlived the car it was based on
The Golf hatchback was replaced in 1983. The Golf Cabriolet was not. It carried on, built on the old first-generation floorpan, for another ten years β so that by 1990 Volkswagen was selling a brand-new convertible based on a car designed in the early 1970s, alongside a Golf that had already moved on a generation and was about to move on again.
The reason was that nobody complained. Karmann built it in OsnabrΓΌck at a steady rate, the roll bar that had been criticised at launch had become the thing people recognised it by, and there was no competitor doing the same job. Volkswagen updated the trim, added special editions, and left the engineering alone.
It finally ended in 1993, fourteen years after launch, by which point it had been the best-selling convertible in the world for much of the previous decade.
