One small town lost nineteen men in a few minutes
The 29th Division landed in the first wave at Omaha Beach on 6 June 1944, and Company A of its 116th Infantry Regiment took the worst of it.
That company had been a National Guard unit, which meant it was recruited locally — and a large part of it came from Bedford, Virginia, a town of about 3,200 people. Thirty-five men from Bedford were in the landing. Nineteen were killed in the first minutes on the beach, and three more died later in the campaign.
Proportionally, Bedford suffered the heaviest D-Day losses of any community in the United States. The news reached the town by telegram over a single morning in July, delivered to a street where everyone knew everyone.
The National D-Day Memorial was built in Bedford because of it.
