A COBI minifigure of a US Navy sailor in printed uniform with the white hat, fixed to a matching brick with a metal chain and keyring. The connection points are glued so it survives daily use.

The hat has a job

The white cap the figure wears is officially the combination cap's enlisted counterpart and universally the Dixie cup. It has been in service since 1886, which makes it one of the oldest unchanged items of uniform in any navy.

It survives because it is useful. It is cotton, so it can be washed by hand and dried anywhere. It has no brim to catch on hatches in a ship's passageway. It can be rolled flat and put in a pocket. And it is white, which on a warship in the tropics is not decoration.

Sailors also used it as a bowl, a bag and a pillow, and generations wrote their names inside the crown because everyone's looked identical.

In the COBI range

One of a series of sixteen figure keyrings from the Historical Collection. Set 1373 is the retail display holding the full assortment. Sets 4825 and 4849 are the PT-109 and the Higgins boat.
