COBI's Top Gun Logo is a three-dimensional brick model of the film's emblem, built from 628 blocks, 52.5 cm wide and 20.5 cm high. Micro-scale models of the F-14 Tomcat and the MiG-28 are included and mount alongside it. Produced under the official Top Gun licence for the film's 40th anniversary.

This is a display object rather than a vehicle โ€” there is nothing to pose or play with, and it is meant for a wall shelf, a desk or a cabinet.

Top Gun is a real school, and it exists because the Navy was losing

The star and wings are a film logo, but the name is not invented. The United States Navy Fighter Weapons School was set up at Miramar in 1969, and the reason was embarrassing.

Over Vietnam, American crews flying supersonic missile-armed Phantoms were being shot down by MiG-17s โ€” subsonic aircraft designed in the 1940s, armed with cannon. A Navy review found the problem was not the hardware. Pilots had been trained to fire missiles at radar contacts and had almost no practice in close-range manoeuvring, because doctrine had declared that obsolete.

The school taught dissimilar air combat: flying against different aircraft types, with instructors deliberately imitating enemy tactics. Navy kill ratios improved sharply over the remainder of the war.

The programme still runs, now at Fallon in Nevada. The film is a dramatisation of it.
