COBI's Škoda Octavia RS is a 1:12 model built from 2,405 blocks, 37 cm long, under original Škoda licence — COBI's first modern passenger car at this scale. The steering wheel turns the wheels, the doors open on hinges, the bonnet tilts to a brick-built engine, and lights, instruments, wheels and logos are all reproduced in print. No stickers.

The brand that was a punchline

In 1980s Britain, Škoda was a joke with its own genre. What do you call a Škoda with a sunroof? A skip. Why does a Škoda have a heated rear window? To keep your hands warm while you push it.

The cars were Communist-era Czech products sold cheap in the West, and the reputation was largely deserved.

Volkswagen bought a stake in 1991 and took full control by 2000. What followed is one of the more complete reversals in industrial history: Škoda now builds on Volkswagen platforms in Volkswagen factories to Volkswagen standards, and regularly finishes above Volkswagen itself in owner satisfaction and reliability surveys.

The company also did something unusual with its past. Rather than bury the jokes, Škoda's British advertising in the early 2000s ran on them — the campaign showed people refusing to believe a good car could be a Škoda, and it worked because it acknowledged what everyone already thought.

The RS

RS has been Škoda's performance badge since 2000, and the fourth-generation Octavia RS arrived in 2020. The Octavia itself has been in production since 1996 and is the car Škoda sells most of. Škoda Auto was founded in Mladá Boleslav in 1895 and is one of the oldest continuously operating car manufacturers in the world.
