COBI Sd.Kfz.8 Towing 8.8 cm Flak 36 Set 3143
COBI's Sd.Kfz. 8 Towing 8.8 cm Flak 36 is a 1:35 set built from 975 blocks, 43 cm long as a combination: the half-track tractor and the gun on its Sonderanhänger 201 trailer, both in Afrika Korps desert paint. The trailer detaches and two pairs of bogies come off to put the gun on the ground. The mount turns, the barrel elevates, and the tractor has detailed running gear and working tracks. Three figures are included, an officer and artillerymen in desert uniform, one in a tropical helmet, plus a weapons crate, ammunition and a printed plaque.
Getting the gun there was the hard part
An 8.8 cm Flak weighed around seven tonnes in travel order, on a two-bogie trailer. That is not something a lorry tows across soft sand.
The Sd.Kfz. 8 was a 12-tonne half-track built for exactly this: tracks at the rear for traction, steered wheels at the front, and enough power to move a heavy gun and its crew together. Without it the 88 was a fixed emplacement. With it, the gun could follow an advance, set up behind a ridge, fire, and be gone before counter-battery fire arrived.
That mobility is the whole reason the 88 acquired its reputation as a tank killer rather than remaining an air-defence weapon behind the lines. A gun that cannot move is a gun the enemy drives around.
The logistics were not free. A single 88 battery required tractors, ammunition vehicles, a fire-control section and fuel for all of it — in a theatre where every litre came by ship across a contested Mediterranean.
In the COBI range
Set 3141 is the gun alone in desert colours, and 3140 the European version with trailer.
