COBI R.M.S. Titanic 1:300 Set 1686
COBI's large R.M.S. Titanic is a 1:300 model built from 3,260 blocks, 91 cm long and 27 cm high on its stand, with a printed plaque carrying the ship's name and scale.
The propellers and cranes move, and every marking is printed onto the blocks โ nothing needs gluing or painting. COBI reworked this edition with new printed brick patterns and a revised internal structure, so the hull holds its shape better than the earlier version did at this length.
Count the funnels
Titanic had four, and only three of them did anything. The aft funnel was a dummy, connected to ventilation ducts and the galley rather than to any boiler. It was there because four funnels looked more powerful than three, and because the travelling public had learned to read funnel count as a measure of speed and safety. The model reproduces all four, including the false one.
She was built at Harland and Wolff in Belfast, held together by roughly three million rivets, and launched in May 1911. Her maiden voyage ran from Southampton on 10 April 1912 by way of Cherbourg and Queenstown, and ended four days later, 600 kilometres south of Newfoundland. The wreck lay undiscovered until 1985, when Robert Ballard's expedition found her at 3,800 metres โ deeper than any salvage of the era could have reached, which is why she is still down there.
In the COBI range
At 1:300 this model shares the scale of COBI's warships, so it stands correctly alongside them โ and it dwarfs them, because Titanic was longer than most of them. Note that COBI also sells the Titanic as set 1680 at 1:700: same ship, 593 pieces, 38.5 cm. This is the large one.
