What the numbers mean

1500, 2500, 3500. The figures look like model names and are in fact a payload classification inherited from the 1960s, when a 1500 was a half-ton truck, a 2500 a three-quarter-ton and a 3500 a one-ton.

Those ratings have been meaningless for decades — a modern half-ton pickup will carry close to a ton — but the names stayed because customers understood them. What they still tell you is the class: the 1500 is the light-duty truck most people buy, and the 2500 and 3500 are heavy duty, with stronger frames, bigger brakes and axles, and the option of the Cummins inline-six diesel that the 1500 does not offer.

One correction to the usual product copy: the RAM 2500 is not a mid-size pickup. It is a full-size heavy-duty truck, and it weighs more empty than most cars do loaded.
