COBI RAM 1500 Sheriff Set 24658

COBI's RAM 1500 Sheriff is a 1:35 model built from 211 blocks under official RAM licence, 18.5 cm long, with movable wheels on rubber tires, an opening tailgate, and a figure of an American sheriff with hat, insignia, handcuffs and rifle. A sticker sheet is included.

A sheriff is elected

This is the part that confuses everyone outside the United States. A police chief is appointed and answers to a city government. A sheriff is voted into office by the residents of a county, typically for four years, and answers to them directly. He can be voted out, and regularly is.

The office is older than the country — it came over from England, where the shire reeve was the king's man in a county — and it survives because American counties are large and rural and needed someone with authority who lived there. A sheriff's department polices everything outside the incorporated towns, runs the county jail, serves court papers and provides courtroom security.

Which is why the vehicle is a pickup. The jurisdiction is measured in hundreds of square miles of it, much of it unpaved, and the deputy driving it may be the only officer for thirty minutes in any direction.
