Why American police drive pickups

A police pickup looks odd to European eyes, because European policing happens on roads. A great deal of American policing does not.

County sheriff's departments cover territory measured in hundreds of square miles, much of it unpaved, and a deputy may be the only officer within forty minutes of a call. A saloon cannot reach a farm track in March, tow a stranded vehicle off a highway shoulder, or carry the equipment — rifle, medical kit, road flares, spare fuel, sometimes a dog — that a rural officer works alone with.

Manufacturers build these as a distinct product line, not as an afterthought: uprated alternators to run the electronics, heavy-duty cooling for hours of idling, reinforced seat frames that work with a duty belt, and calibrated speedometers. The truck in this set is that vehicle.
