COBI R.M.S. Titanic Set 1680

COBI's R.M.S. Titanic is a 1:700 model built from 593 blocks, 38.5 cm long, supplied with a display stand and a plaque carrying the ship's name.

The cranes swing, the propellers and rudder turn, and the hull reproduces the sheer and counter stern of the original. Every marking is printed onto the blocks — COBI includes no stickers in this set at all — and nothing needs gluing or painting.

The real Titanic

Titanic was 269 metres long and displaced over 46,000 gross tons, the second of three Olympic-class liners built by Harland and Wolff in Belfast for the White Star Line. She struck an iceberg on the night of 14 April 1912, four days into her maiden voyage, and sank in the early hours of the 15th. Around 2,200 people were aboard and roughly 1,500 were lost.

What is less often remembered is that she had two sisters. Olympic entered service the year before, survived a collision, a torpedo attack and a wartime ramming that sank a German submarine, and worked the Atlantic until 1935 — her crews called her Old Reliable. Britannic never carried a paying passenger: completed as a hospital ship, she struck a mine in the Aegean in 1916 and went down in under an hour. Of the three ships built to the same plans, only one had an ordinary career.

Note the scale. COBI builds most of its warships at 1:300; this model is 1:700, which is why a ship of 269 metres fits into 38.5 cm. It will not stand correctly next to the 1:300 vessels — at that scale the Titanic would be close to a metre long.
