A COBI minifigure of a Polish pilot of the Royal Air Force in printed flying gear, fixed to a matching brick with a metal chain and keyring. The connection points are glued so it survives daily use.

The squadron the RAF did not believe

303 Squadron was formed in 1940 from Polish pilots who had escaped their own country and then France. The RAF was doubtful about them — the language barrier was real and the assumption was that they would need training.

They finished the Battle of Britain as the highest-scoring squadron in Fighter Command.

Their claims were initially treated with scepticism at headquarters, until a British officer flew with them and confirmed what they were doing. The Poles had been fighting the Luftwaffe since September 1939 and had learned to open fire at a range British doctrine considered suicidally close.

In the COBI range

One of a series of sixteen figure keyrings from the Historical Collection. Set 1373 is the retail display holding the full assortment. Sets 5728 and 5762 are Hurricanes in Polish and Czech squadron markings.
