COBI Panzerjäger Tiger Ausf.B Jagdtiger Set 2674

COBI's Panzerjäger Tiger Ausf. B Jagdtiger is a 1:28 model built from 1,371 blocks, 38.5 cm long, with working tracks, opening hatches, a movable gun barrel, a removable armour section giving access to the engine compartment and crew stations, and a removable Maybach HL120 TRM engine. Three figures are included — a commander with an eye patch and facial scar, a crewman in black uniform, and a mechanic with a hammer — plus a collector's plate.

Two different suspensions, one vehicle

The Jagdtiger was built in two incompatible versions, and you can tell them apart by counting road wheels.

Most used Henschel's torsion-bar suspension with nine overlapping road wheels per side, inherited from the Tiger II hull the vehicle was built on. Around eleven used Ferdinand Porsche's design instead: longitudinal torsion bars, eight wheels, a shorter and simpler running gear that was easier to build and repair. Porsche's was arguably the better idea and was dropped anyway, because by 1944 changing a production line mattered more than improving one.

A self-propelled bunker

At around 75 tonnes it was the heaviest armoured vehicle to see combat in the war, and the last German tank destroyer to reach mass production. The crew was six: commander, gunner, two loaders — the 12.8 cm shell came in two separate pieces — driver and radio operator.

Most were not lost in battle. They broke down, ran out of fuel, or were caught by Allied aircraft, and their crews destroyed them. In the last weeks of the war several were used for something the designers had not imagined: covering the retreat of German units moving west, so that they could surrender to the Americans rather than to the Red Army.
