COBI's ORP Sęp is a 1:300 model built from 190 blocks, 28.5 cm long, released in cooperation with the Naval Museum in Gdynia. The propellers and control surfaces move, and a display stand with a collector's plaque is included. All markings are printed.
Interned for five years, then back in service for twenty-four
Sęp was the sister of ORP Orzeł, built at Rotterdam and rushed to Poland in April 1939 before she had formally been accepted from the yard — the war was close enough that the paperwork could wait.
In September she took part in the Worek plan, the attempt to defend the Polish coast with submarines, and tried to torpedo the German destroyer Friedrich Ihn. She was hunted, damaged by depth charges, and with no Polish port left to return to she made for neutral Sweden. She was interned there for the rest of the war.
That is where the two sisters' stories diverge completely. Orzeł escaped internment, reached Britain, fought, and vanished in 1940. Sęp sat out the war at anchor — and survived it. She returned to Poland in 1945, served the postwar navy as a training and patrol boat, and was finally decommissioned in 1969, thirty-one years after she was launched.
In the COBI range
Set 4855 is ORP Orzeł at the same scale. The German boats U-47 (4858) and U-96 (4857) are also 1:300. The model reflects Sęp's appearance after her refit, which differs slightly from her sister's.
