COBI Mitsubishi A6M2 Zero-Sen Set 5729 (Damaged Box)
COBI's Mitsubishi A6M2 Zero-Sen is a 1:32 model built from 347 blocks, 27 cm long with a 38 cm wingspan, with movable propeller and ailerons, retracting wheels and an opening canopy for the pilot figure. A display stand and nameplate are included.
Condition
This set is sold at a reduced price because the outer box is damaged β it may have holes, creases or crushed corners. The contents are brand new, sealed and complete. If you are building the model rather than collecting sealed boxes, the only difference is the price.
Where the name comes from
The aircraft had no name. Its designation was Navy Type 0 Carrier Fighter, and the zero is a calendar reference: it entered service in the Japanese year 2600, which is 1940. Allied pilots shortened it to Zero, and the name that stuck was one the Japanese navy never used.
What it cost to be that good
In 1941 the Zero could out-turn, out-climb and outrange anything the Allies had in the Pacific, and JirΕ Horikoshi achieved that by removing weight wherever weight could be removed: no armour behind the pilot, no self-sealing fuel tanks, a lightened alloy developed for this aircraft alone.
Against inexperienced opponents in 1941 that trade was worth it. By 1943 it was killing its own side. Around 11,000 were built.
