COBI M1A2 Abrams Set 2632
COBI's M1A2 Abrams is a 1:35 model built from 1,025 blocks, 27.5 cm long, with a turret that rotates through 360 degrees, an elevating 120 mm gun, movable M2 Browning and M240 machine guns, opening hatches, rear service hatches and a removable rear armour plate for access to the interior. An American tank crewman in desert camouflage is included, plus a collector's plaque with the flag. All markings are printed; the set contains no stickers.
It has a helicopter engine
Under the rear deck is not a diesel. The Abrams runs on a Honeywell AGT1500 gas turbine β a jet engine, driving the tracks through a transmission, and the only one fitted to a Western main battle tank.
The advantages are real. It starts instantly in extreme cold, delivers full torque from a standstill, has a fraction of the moving parts of a diesel of similar output, and runs on almost anything that burns: jet fuel, diesel, petrol, kerosene. It is also strikingly quiet at a distance, because a turbine's noise is high-frequency and dissipates fast β crews in the Gulf found they could arrive before they were heard, and the Iraqis reportedly called the tank whispering death.
The cost is fuel. A turbine burns nearly as much sitting still as moving, which is why an Abrams idling on a hillside consumes something in the order of 40 litres an hour doing nothing at all, and why the logistics tail behind an American armoured brigade is as large as it is.
The 120 mm gun, incidentally, is German β Rheinmetall's L/44, built under licence in the United States from 1985.
