COBI Lockheed P-38H Lightning Set 5763 (Damaged Box)

COBI's Lockheed P-38H Lightning is a 1:32 model built from 650 blocks, 35.5 cm long with a 49 cm wingspan, with turning propellers, folding landing gear, movable ailerons and an opening cockpit for the pilot figure. A display stand with a plaque is included.

Condition

This set is sold at a reduced price because the outer box is damaged — it may have holes, creases or crushed corners. The contents are brand new, sealed and complete. If you are building the model rather than collecting sealed boxes, the only difference is the price.

The man who designed it

Clarence "Kelly" Johnson was 27 when he laid out the P-38, and the twin-boom configuration was his answer to a specification nobody thought could be met. He went on to found Lockheed's Skunk Works and design the U-2 and the SR-71 Blackbird.

The longest fighter mission of the war

On 18 April 1943 sixteen P-38s flew over 700 kilometres at wave height in radio silence to intercept Admiral Yamamoto, arriving within a minute of the calculated time. No other aircraft in the Pacific had the range.

The P-38's guns are all in the nose rather than the wings, so the fire goes where the aircraft is pointed at any distance. German pilots called it der Gabelschwanzteufel, the fork-tailed devil.
