COBI ISU 152 Set 3096

COBI's ISU-152 is a 1:72 model built from 135 blocks, 12 cm long, with printed markings on the hull sides.

Beast killer

Red Army crews called it the Zveroboy, which translates roughly as beast slayer, and the beasts in question were the Tiger and the Panther.

The 152 mm gun was not an anti-tank weapon. It was a howitzer, firing a shell weighing over 40 kilograms, and it did not need to penetrate armour to work. A direct hit on a Tiger could tear the turret off its ring, crack welds, or kill the crew through the armour by shock alone without the shell ever coming through.

The cost was rate of fire. The shell and its propellant charge were loaded separately by hand, and a good crew managed two or three rounds a minute. An ISU-152 got one or two chances per engagement, and that was usually enough.

The vehicle itself is a fixed casemate on the IS heavy tank chassis, so aiming meant turning the whole thing — it worked from ambush and in the assault, and badly in a moving battle.
