COBI IS-2 Set 3098
COBI's IS-2 is a 1:72 model built from 130 blocks, 12 cm long, with a turret that rotates and a barrel that elevates. The printed markings include the white stripes carried during the Berlin operation.
Two-piece ammunition
The IS-2's 122 mm gun could destroy a Tiger or a Panther at ranges where they could barely hurt it. What it could not do was shoot often.
A 122 mm round was too heavy and too long to load as one piece in a turret that size, so shell and propellant charge went in separately. The loader handled both, in sequence, in a cramped space β and a good crew managed two to three rounds a minute against six or more from a German tank with one-piece ammunition. The tank also carried only 28 rounds.
Soviet doctrine accepted that. The IS-2 was not meant to duel; it was meant to lead an assault, break fortifications and kill heavy tanks when it met them, with numbers making up for rate of fire.
The white stripes
The bands painted across the turret roof and hull were air recognition markings, agreed with the Western Allies before the final advance so that American and British pilots could tell Soviet armour from German at speed. They are the quickest way to date a photograph to 1945.
