The fastest ambulance in Italy
The Polizia di Stato has run Alfa Romeos since the 1960s, and the Giulia Quadrifoglio is the current one. The reason it is a 510 hp car rather than an ordinary patrol saloon is a job most people have never heard of.
Italian police use these cars to move human organs for transplant. A donated heart has a few hours of viability, and when it has to cross the country the drive is done by a marked Quadrifoglio with a blue light, at speeds no ambulance could hold. The runs have covered several hundred kilometres in times that would be illegal for anyone else.
The rest of the fleet does the expected work โ motorway patrol, pursuit, escort. The Italian police have had a reputation for fast cars since the Alfa 75 and the Giulia of the 1960s, and the tradition is unbroken.
