A police force that runs a navy

The Guardia di Finanza is the part of the Italian state that chases money. It reports to the Ministry of Economy and Finance rather than the interior ministry, and its remit is smuggling, tax evasion, counterfeiting, drug trafficking, money laundering and financial crime — the things that cross borders and move through accounts rather than happen on street corners.

Because smuggling arrives by sea and air, the Guardia di Finanza operates its own fleet of patrol boats and its own aircraft, which makes it one of very few civilian financial authorities anywhere with a navy. It is also, like the Carabinieri, a militarised corps: its officers hold military rank.

A 510 hp Giulia belongs to the mobile and rapid-response units, which is the end of the work that looks less like accountancy.
