COBI's Flying Scotsman is a 1:35 model built from 2,677 blocks, 66 cm long with its tender. The coupled drive mechanism turns as the model is pushed, the engine room roof opens onto a detailed interior, the tender couples to further wagons, and over 60 cm of track is included. Two figures are supplied, a driver and a fireman.

One hundred miles an hour

On 30 November 1934, on a test run between Leeds and London, the Flying Scotsman became the first steam locomotive officially recorded at 100 mph — 160.9 km/h.

The claim had been made before and never properly proved. This one was measured with a dynamometer car coupled behind the tender, recording speed and drawbar pull on a paper roll, with independent observers aboard. That is why this run counts and earlier ones do not.

The locomotive was designed by Nigel Gresley and built at Doncaster in 1923 for the London and North Eastern Railway. Fifty-five years later, on 8 August 1989, touring Australia, it ran 679 kilometres without stopping — the longest non-stop run by a steam locomotive anywhere.

It is still working

The Flying Scotsman was withdrawn by British Railways in 1963 and was saved by private buyers, then by the businessman Alan Pegler, then — after a bankruptcy in America, from which it had to be rescued — by others. It was bought for the National Railway Museum in 2004 by public appeal.

It celebrated its centenary in 2023 in steam, hauling passengers on the national network. Very few machines of any kind are still doing their original job at a hundred years old.

In the COBI range

The British counterpart to COBI's German locomotives — the BR 52 (6281, 6282, 6283, 6287) and the BR 03 (6286, 6288) — all at 1:35 on compatible track.
