COBI F-4 Phantom II - USS Midway Set 5897

COBI's F-4 Phantom II is a 1:48 model built from 703 blocks, 38 cm long, in the markings of a squadron aboard the USS Midway. The ailerons move, the landing gear and weapons detach, and the cockpit opens for two figures. A display stand with a plate carrying the name and scale is included. All markings are printed; no stickers.

The ship the aircraft is painted for

The USS Midway was commissioned one week after the Second World War ended and served until 1992 — forty-seven years, longer than any other American aircraft carrier of the twentieth century.

She was the first US carrier too large to pass through the Panama Canal, which permanently split the fleet's logistics. She was rebuilt twice, so completely that the ship of 1970 shared little but a name with the ship of 1945. Her aircraft flew the first strikes of the Vietnam War and the first of Operation Desert Storm, and in April 1975 she took aboard so many South Vietnamese helicopters during the evacuation of Saigon that crews pushed them over the side to clear the deck.

She is now a museum in San Diego, and a Phantom stands on her deck — the aircraft this model is painted as.

The Phantom's records

Before it was a museum piece the F-4 held world records for speed, altitude and time-to-climb, several of them simultaneously. It served the Air Force, the Navy and the Marine Corps at the same time, which no other American combat aircraft has done, and 5,195 were built.
